Description

The second volume covers the period 1960-2009, the most exciting and "rebellious" in the history of American theater. It is a period with intense centrifugal tendencies that make theatrical (and not only) America seem like a huge mosaic that resists any simplistic interpretation. The general conclusion of this two-volume study is that America is a "permanently unfinished novel" that constantly expresses a desire, a desire for more power, greater security, greater wealth, etc. And we know that where there is desire, there is also performance. And in this sense, the political, cultural, and of course theatrical history of the place could be seen as a complex performance of desires, sometimes with the specifications of a grand guignol and sometimes of a grand spectacle, but almost always according to the logic of a shopping mall.
