I don't know if it needs an update, but when you are above the speed limit, it says you are moving below it. You have to have it permanently connected to the charger, which means the cable might be annoying as it hangs. The screen brightness is insufficient during the day. There is a rare chance of losing satellite signal. The FM transmitter has interference. Despite all this, it does its job. I am satisfied. Considering the low cost, it's great.
