Description
This book aims to fill an important historiographical gap regarding Greek political refugees in East Germany. However, it is not just another general study on political asylum in the aftermath of the Civil War, as it focuses more on the clarification of the terms under which this particular community of political refugees was included in the practices of a well-established political system and was treated with specific tools of coercion by the East German regime.
The "Greeks of Stasi", that is, those who were recruited by the East German State Security as significant agents or simple informants from the early 1950s until the fall of the Wall in 1989, constitute the second part of the book. They were mainly children and young people, but also some members of the Communist Party of Greece, who were trapped in the clutches of the Stasi. Through the study of individual cases, an attempt is made to understand the structure and functioning of a totalitarian mechanism of control and discipline in society, whose mission was the perpetuation of the communist regime of the German Democratic Republic, the "showcase" of the Eastern Bloc.
