Description

In my previous studies, I have been deeply concerned not only about the management of the Cyprus issue in the past, but also about how we should proceed in the future, what we need to do to reunify our island, and what we need to avoid in order to prevent the consolidation or exacerbation of the existing negative situation.

Today, it is not particularly useful to discuss past settlement plans and our reactions to them. On the contrary, I believe that finding an agreement is of utmost importance, now and not later. Of course, the content of any agreement is of primary importance, but I believe that the current conditions make a solution necessary, if we are to avoid the complete Turkification of a significant part of Cyprus.

I believe that the negotiation model we have been following for decades has failed and that we should choose a different approach: to pursue the delineation of a roadmap that involves mutual moves on the ground, with the overall constitutional/state solution following at the end of the process. For me, the territorial issue is a priority, with its regulation being implemented before the final solution.

I am in favor of a gradual approach rather than an immediately applicable comprehensive solution - an option that has proven not only ineffective but also extremely dangerous, as it perpetuates the deadlock.
