Church hymns are one of the most fundamental and valuable elements that compose the liturgical life of our Orthodox Church. Exquisite poetic conceptions and masterful compositions by inspired pious men, who experienced the mystery of salvation in Christ in the most profound way, have constituted, for many centuries, the language of the praying Church; they form the voice of the believing and worshipping Orthodox soul.

Through its hymns, the Church prays, theologizes, and teaches; through its hymns, the Church "knows," that is, lives, and simultaneously praises and expresses "the mystery of Christ" (Eph. 4:3).

But the faithful as well, sometimes gathered "together in one place" (Acts 2:1) and other times praying individually, through the hymns, we approach the superessential person of our worshiped Lord, honor His Holy Mother and the saints, and proclaim our mystical joy; the delight of the soul that is born from the inner certainty of our redemption in Christ.
