In the spring of 1900, Menelaos Skliros returned from his last trip to Europe. Everything closed his thirty-eight years. He had never had any profession. He studied law, as all the children of wealthy families who have enough property to live unemployed. His two sisters had left home early. The eldest, who married an officer, took the youngest with her. Menelaos Skliros remained alone and lived a dark life. He only had acquaintances, never friends. They saw him passing on the streets, circulating in the centers, and then disappearing for a while.
