Description

Inspired by the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the novel "Stou Chatzifragou" was published in installments in the newspaper "Tachydromos" in 1962-3, on the fortieth anniversary of the Smyrna Holocaust. The title refers to a popular neighborhood in Smyrna, where most of the episodes of the novel take place. The numerous characters are mostly "ordinary people, with their everyday concerns and small joys". However, beneath a descriptive surface, a completely modern handling of time and space is revealed, as well as the mastery of Politis in unraveling the plot, which consists of four separate dramas subordinated to the great national and human tragedy of Asia Minor. "Stou Chatzifragou", written at the age of 74, Cosmas Politis vividly recreates childhood, showing the depth of his humanity, as well as a clear ideological stance towards the historical events that surround the characters and their dramas.
