Description
We are looking for a way to proceed. Things are not as they used to be. Before, we were sure that we had found the way. Of course, we still have our opinions, we have different opinions. But the days when we communists (if we are communists) lived in a certain world of certainties are irretrievably gone.
It is not that we are not sure about what we reject. That is clear. We reject capitalism, a system more brutal and destructive than ever. Our No is a certainty. No to capitalism: we must find a way out of this system of social organization before it destroys humanity.
Our certainties disappear when we think about how to proceed. How to break capitalism? Is it necessary to seize control of the state? Should we use armed violence? Can we still think of the proletariat as a revolutionary subject, and what does that mean? Are we fighting for communism or democracy, or are they one and the same? Do we think of revolution as a great event that will happen in the future, or do we believe that it is constituted by millions of ruptures that are already happening in the gaps, that are already laying the foundation for a very different society? The uprisings that are happening now are wonderful, but they are not enough: how do we proceed from here? Should we try to institutionalize last year's uprisings in some form, or is it better to think anti-institutionally? The old, strict boundaries between communists, anarchists, and social democrats no longer make much sense, but the old questions still exist; in fact, there are even more.
I am writing these lines on May 15, 2012, the first anniversary of the 15M movement in Spain. And I am writing them to be published in Greece, in a country that is currently boiling with uncertainty. As I write, the latest attempts to form a government have failed and it is now clear that there will be new elections. What these elections will bring is very uncertain, but above all, it is not clear what exactly elections or electoral politics can achieve in a period where the sovereignty of money has been revealed in all its arrogance. Are elections, under these conditions, a mere farce? Is the only thing at stake how money (i.e. capital) will impose its sovereignty: through the institutional form of austerity imposed by the European Union or through the more dramatic form of abandoning Greece, as many other parts of the world have already been abandoned in practice? Can we break the power of money through elections? And if not, then how? By building other forms of socialization that do not focus on money and commodity exchange, but do we have the ability to do this at the moment? And if not, how do we push the situation in that direction? How do we develop the embryonic forms of communism that already exist? How do we reach communalization? [...]
