Description

Packed with power to handle the environments of small and medium-sized business NAS and increased workloads for SOHO customers, the WD Red Plus is ideal for archiving and sharing, as well as rebuilding RAID arrays in systems using ZFS and other file systems.

Built and tested for NAS systems with up to 8 bays, these drives offer you the flexibility, versatility, and confidence to store and share your valuable files at home and work.

For small or medium businesses

Stream, back up, share, and organize your digital content with a NAS and WD Red Plus drives designed to effortlessly share content with devices in your home or business.

NASware technology increases the compatibility of your drives with your existing network and devices. For larger businesses with up to 24 bays, rely on WD Red™ Pro drives that deliver exceptional performance.

Built for optimal NAS compatibility

WD Red Plus drives with NASware technology take the guesswork out of choosing a drive. Optimized for NAS systems, our unique algorithm balances performance and reliability in NAS and RAID environments.

Simply put, a WD Red Plus drive is one of the most compatible drives available for NAS enclosures. But don't just take our word for it. WD Red™ Plus drives are the result of extensive NAS technology partner engagement and compatibility testing.

WD Red Pro for large businesses

If you are looking for heavy-duty performance for NAS, WD Red Pro NAS hard drives provide exceptional performance for medium and large business customers with extreme demands.

For NAS environments with 9 to 24 bays, WD Red Pro units deliver uncompromising performance and unwavering confidence backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

3D Active Balance Plus

The improved dual-stage balance control technology significantly enhances the overall performance and reliability of the motor.

Hard drives that are not properly balanced can cause excessive vibration and noise in a multi-drive system, reduce the lifespan of the hard drive, and degrade performance over time.

24/7 Environment

Given that the NAS system is always operational, a reliable drive is essential. With an MTBF of up to 1 million hours, the WD Red Plus drive is designed to handle 24x7 environments.

Desktop Drives vs. WD Red Plus

Do the right thing for your NAS and choose the drive that is specifically built for NAS with a range of features that help maintain your data and keep optimal performance. Consider the following when choosing a hard drive for your NAS:

  • Compatibility: 3.5" HDDs have been specifically tested for compatibility with NAS systems for optimal performance.
  • Reliability: The always-on environment of a NAS or RAID is hot, and desktop drives are typically not designed and tested under these conditions, unlike WD Red Plus drives.
  • Error recovery controls: WD Red Plus NAS hard drives are specifically designed with RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures in the NAS system.
  • Noise and vibration protection: Desktop drives designed to operate alone usually offer little to no protection from the noise and vibration present in a multi-drive system. WD Red Plus drives are designed to thrive in multi-bay NAS system environments.

I do not trust the company in question. I have lost very important information even in the red edition which is considered high quality. What a pity!

Purchased 2 years ago and still works perfectly. It is connected to a media server that runs constantly and has not had any issues.

It was purchased in 2019 for use on a desktop. I know that NAS is not meant for desktop use, but it is certainly more durable, so I put it on a desktop that was used very little in these 4 years, a total of 120 days of use, and suddenly, without showing any signs of failure, with 100% health in the program and all checks ok, it gave up the ghost. It's a shame because I've been using WD for so many years, but I think it's starting to break down and I'll probably go for Seagate, as they say it's starting to improve, I'm looking at an Ironwolf.

I got this specific one for desktop use (yes, I know that red ones are not meant for this use, but blue ones are, but I wanted something that could withstand 24/7 use and lots of read/writes and had a long warranty). It worked fine at first, but after 6 months it became painfully slow. I thought it was just bad luck. I spent a whole day trying to save what I had inside because it was transferring at a snail's pace. I got it replaced and everything was fine...until the second one also failed in the same way after 6 months. I thought it was just bad luck again and got it replaced. The third one had the same issue. Obviously, I had fallen for the SMR trap. I switched to WD Purple for the same reason I got this one, and it has been working perfectly for 4 years now, so I got a second one. Unless you can find it in CMR (EFRX), stay away from red!

For non-RAID systems: The disk is reliable, fast, and relatively quiet.

For NAS: WARNING! As mentioned by another (sympathetic colleague), WD replaced the technology from CMR to SMR without announcing it. SMR works perfectly on its own but is unacceptable in RAID/SHR. Therefore, be careful with the disk model. Prefer EFRX instead of EFAX.

Not very reliable. Four out of the 14 I bought crashed within warranty. I wouldn't recommend them for NAS servers with important data. Maybe only for a backup server, where you won't suffer a big loss if something happens. And that's because of the lower price compared to the smaller risk.

I have had it for a little over a year and it has approximately 10,000 hours so far. Currently, I haven't encountered any issues but of course, the disk has a Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of 1,000,000 hours, so you never know when it might fail. Overall, I have had a good experience with WD (over 7.8 disks that have been running for years).

The speeds are okay for a 5400rpm disk.

Looking at the statistics from the data center (https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-stats-for-2019/), we can see that a year or two ago, it had an Annual Failure Rate (AFR) of about 2%, although their statistical sample was not large. Nevertheless, it is similar to Seagate in its category.

Whether it's WD or Seagate, the bottom line is that you can't rely on just one disk, you need a backup

These disks are not the fastest, nor do they have the most detailed SMART data. However, they maintain a low temperature (I have never seen them go above 40 degrees in a NAS with 3-8 of them), have low noise and vibrations (important for a home office), have low power consumption, and have satisfactory speed in RAID. They are also very reliable. I have had WD RED disks of various capacities for 10 years and none of them have failed. I recently considered buying other disks that were faster, had better SMART features, and were even cheaper, but in the end I stuck with WD RED and did not regret it. If anyone can afford to buy the RED PRO, even better (with a longer warranty). Don't bother running benchmarks. They are slower than others that run at 7000 rpm (and produce more heat). However, this does not matter for RAID-5 with 3 disks or more.

I cannot evaluate it 100%, as it is very new to me in terms of purchase and use, only 1-2 months. For 200 euros, it's good. Time will tell. So far, it seems okay. Its capacity is very positive for me. I got it to store EVERYTHING. And copying from an SSD to it, for example, a 700mb-1g movie, takes 5-10 seconds...!!! For 5-6 movies, it takes less than 1 minute. That's all for now.

It has been installed on Synology DS218. The noise that may be heard in quiet surroundings when recording is perfectly normal when speaking about a distance of 30cm from the head. I cannot judge its reliability yet.

For a homemade NAS, it's just what you need, even if it's SMR, the difference won't be utilized at a hobbyist level of simple NAS use. Also, since I changed both old hard drives with two of these, nothing can be heard from the PC even if they copy something. It's like they don't exist in terms of noise, no matter what I do with excellent temperatures.

Great caution should be exercised with WD Red < 8TB drives with huge cache (256MB). Due to cost reasons, WD changed the recording technology to SMR without any announcement, resulting in several issues, especially in RAID usage, particularly during rebuild/resilver.

An excellent disk for use in a NAS where the main reason for purchase is reliability. I have three other 3gb Red drives, which have been running 24/7 for 2260, 1900, and 1700 days without any problems.

This is the 4th WD Red that I have in NAS boxes. It has a large capacity but, as expected, relatively low speeds since it is at 5400 RPM. When copying files from the NAS SSD, it reaches 180MB/s. To "fix" the speed issue, I also have SSD cache acceleration in the same NAS, so in the end, the speed doesn't bother me.

I will update the review over time to see how it holds up.

First update: 18 months after purchase and daily use. No problems so far.

The product arrived damaged... I sent it back a month ago and still haven't received any notification about what was wrong with it... nor my money back, of course... The response was that they will send it to the company and let me know... for something I didn't even get to use for a minute... UNACCEPTABLE...

...and the next disk will be WD RED.
I have 7 WD30EFRX disks and not one has had a failure.
The oldest one "wears" 80.00A80 firmware, has 1694 days or 40656 hours of operation, 4800 start/stop cycles, and 0 reallocated sectors.
The newest one "wears" 82.00A82 firmware, has 579 days or 13910 hours of operation, 4050 start/stop cycles, and 0 reallocated sectors.
They all work in non-RAID mode, in an air-cooled desktop PC that restarts every 4-5 months and shuts down during summers when the ambient temperature exceeds 39 Celsius.
However, they also have performance issues depending on the production LOT.
For example, the oldest one has 115MB/s sustained read while the newest one is limited to 110MB/s and another one doesn't exceed 95MB/s.
    Some users report problems.
I just wanted to note some possible causes of problems:
    A. Faulty LOT,
    B. Poor transportation conditions in the supply chain,
    C. Intense temperature fluctuations during operation,
    D. High humidity,
    E. Vibrations during use

Use on Synology NAS with light usage (primarily for backups) for less than 4 years. It produces bad sectors after 5000 hours of operation. This particular NAS also has 2 WD GREEN drives with triple the operating hours that work without any problems (making you wonder if the extra cost of 10-15% for red is worth it). For NAS-level hardware and given the light usage, I believe their reliability should have been much better. I also have a second one that was purchased together, and I will report back when and if they "spit them out". I agree with the speed and temperature (fast and doesn't get hot)
