Description
The long 19th century will end in reverse of what it started. If it started with a Revolution, the French Revolution, which will cause two decades of war conflicts, the Napoleonic Wars, it will end with a Great War that will in turn cause a Revolution, the Russian Revolution, which will claim for itself that it completes the principles on which the first one was based. Mainly the principle of equality. But how can such an approach of the revolutionary phenomenon in its relation to war make us see history of the Balkans in a different way or reinterpret it? By seeing the emergence of national movements in the Balkans, therefore of the uprisings that claimed the status of Revolution, not as an autonomous awakening process nor as a mechanistic result of the competition of the Great Powers in the Eastern Mediterranean. But to treat the national movements as correspondences of the revolutionary process that marked the history of the West itself. The national movements in Eastern and Southeastern Europe, in a vast geographical zone from Poland to Greece, will constantly negotiate their identity based on the internal ruptures of the West. The wars usually between the Continental empires (the Ottomans, the Habsburgs, and the Romanovs), as well as some of them with the colonial empires, were the result of these internal ruptures.
