In 1996, I witnessed first-hand - along with my sister who had kidney disease - how kidney transplants are illegally performed in India. Young Indians sell their kidneys to save their families from hunger. The clients are desperate kidney patients, risking their lives. Around this double human suffering, a whole network of doctors and intermediaries has been established, who are getting rich. All of this experience, as well as what we faced upon our return to Greece, is the material on which my novel "Kidney Transplant" is based.
