Kit with everything you need to get started with the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B
Package contents:
Specifications are collected from official manufacturer websites. Please verify the specifications before proceeding with your final purchase. If you notice any problem you can report it here.
If I were to evaluate this product only for the Raspberry, then I would easily give it 5 stars. In this category, the Pi 4 is the endgame for those who want an always-on, cost-effective, and powerful machine for server use or a user-friendly platform to start projects and programming. On the other hand, if you are looking for something more in terms of desktop replacement, I would recommend the Pi 400, which has the same internals integrated into a keyboard and can become an "invisible" everyday computer for simple tasks with Ubuntu, Manjaro, or even Raspberry OS. However, since most people looking for Raspberry already know these things, let's move on to the kit itself. The case is made of very cheap plastic and requires attention when tightening the screws, but other than that, it is fully functional. As for the HDMI cable, there have been some complaints, but for me, it worked perfectly at 1080p resolution at least. The power supply is slightly out of spec (5V instead of 5.1V), but the difference is negligible in my opinion, and the fact that it includes a dedicated on/off button is very convenient. The problem with this kit is the fan. I bought two of these kits (one for LibreELEC at my home and the other for home assistant at another house), and in both cases, the fan stopped spinning within a few minutes and required manual push to start, after which it made an annoying noise (prohibitive for a bedroom where one is located, as well as an office where the other is located). I would recommend anyone who buys this kit to consider the fan as disposable and invest in a Pi-Fan or the official fan (3-10€). Apart from that, if you manage to get your hands on anything related to Raspberry at a satisfactory price, I would recommend it for someone who either is just starting out or has no intention of making major modifications that obviously the case cannot accommodate (such as cooling, etc.) and just wants to set it up and forget about it in a closet (like me).
It's just what you need! With the help of BootBerry OS, there is the possibility to boot into more than one operating system. I have installed Raspberry OS for browsing and RetroPie OS for retro gaming. The browsing is pretty good for only 85€. But where it really shows its value is in RetroPie. It runs flawlessly up to PlayStation 1 and Dreamcast games, even the most demanding ones. It runs Nintendo DS games almost perfectly and PSP games quite well (e.g. PES 11, Tekken 6). It runs most first-party Nintendo 64 games (the ones the average gamer intends to play, like Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Mario Party, TLoZ: Ocarina Of Time). The purchase I recommend to everyone is the 3 heat sinks (2€), so that the Raspberry Pi 4B doesn't overheat while overclocked to 2.147mhz CPU and 750mhz GPU (which I recommend for some demanding games from PSP and N64). It takes time to set it up and download the games, but in the end, I believe it's worth more than 85€.
I wrote the same review on the store's website:
For the Raspberry Pi, I have nothing to say. It is one of the best in its category, if not the best. Especially the 4B version with 8GB RAM doesn't lag in anything. I use it for nextcloud & ssh to access my home network (fiber optic 120mbps down/120mbps up) when I'm away.
Regarding the rest of the package:
HDMI cable: For the little I used it, it's great. I don't know if you will watch movies with good quality. For text-based use, it's great!
Adapter: Convenient that it has a button.
Case: It's just a simple case, nothing special, but it does its job perfectly.
Fan: Here is what we call "you win some, you lose some..." I have it inside a cabinet to reduce the noise made by the fan. With full CPU load, the temperature stayed below 55 degrees, and in idle it ranges from 38-42, with a room temperature of 26 degrees. Today it started sounding like a tractor, so I closed it, disconnected the fan, and let it work like that (idle at 66 degrees!) Fortunately, the new case arrived today (metallic for passive cooling, also from the same store) with 2 fans, which I will let run if they don't make noise... -1 star for the package due to the fan.
