"The Novel of the Four" was written under peculiar conditions that explain its entire structure, its fragmentary nature, as well as the fun that permeates it, the invention of complex situations and mysteries - not so much, one suspects, to engage the readers' interest, but mainly to see how the next author friend will untangle from the predicaments. With this spirit of play and experimentation, we too should perhaps approach "The Novel of the Four".
