For more than two decades, El. Mioni's Handbook of Greek Paleography has been the primary tool for Greek, and not only, students of the Departments of Philology and History to access the sciences of paleography and codicology. Although the book was "much-discussed" both secretly and openly, in university and non-university settings, by various individuals, as is usually the case with those who do not dare to articulate their own "better" argument in writing but hide behind easy criticism and "winged words," it nevertheless met, and perhaps still partially meets today, the needs of scholars and the general public in their effort to understand the handwritten codex and its history, being a comprehensible and concise study tool, a generally useful book. However, in the years that have passed since the first Greek edition of this Handbook (1977), research in the field of paleography and codicology, and the study of handwritten codices in general, has experienced, and continues to experience, significant growth. Paleography Laboratories are being established, international and national conferences are being organized, special journals and collective works concerning the binding of handwritten codices, decoration, the history of writing, and the preservation of codices are being published.
