Perhaps the most iconic American director in the history of cinema, with passionate fans and grateful descendants, with opponents and pursuers still, Stanley Kubrick, if he were alive today, would be ninety-one - and twenty years have already passed since his death. Even those who have seen a little cinema have certainly heard or seen "Spartacus", "Lolita", the comedy "S.O.S. Pentagon Calls Moscow", "A Clockwork Orange", "The Shining" or, perhaps more, "2001: A Space Odyssey". The latter may have in mind the social-media myth that Kubrick directed the fake moon landing of the Americans with "Apollo 11" in Hollywood, in 1969! Cinema sometimes becomes more believable than reality. Or, reality, as it goes more and more often, resembles a movie. Stanley Kubrick was one of the great masters of the art. But how much do we really know about his entire body of work?
Twenty-one critics write in this edition of the Panhellenic Union of Film Critics (PEKK), which accompanies the tribute to the twenty years since the director's death, from the 32nd Panorama of European Cinema, and gives us a good opportunity to re-examine, with a critical eye, all of his films, his unknown photographic work, and special aspects of the cinema of the creator we loved.
