According to its definition, Medical Physics is the branch of Physics that deals with the application of the ideas and methods of Physics in Medicine. The application involves diagnosis, treatment, and research. A large part of the activity of Medical Physics is related to medical imaging and the therapeutic use of various forms of radiation. Biophysics uses the methods of Physics and Physical Chemistry to study biological systems. The studies included in the fields of Biophysics concern the entire scale of biological organization, from the cell to the entire biological organism or ecosystems. The boundaries between Medical Physics and Biophysics are indistinct. In each University, depending on the tradition and the way the Medical Schools have developed, emphasis has been given to one or the other direction.
This textbook "Concise Medical Physics" was written for medical students. It is a unified edition of the volumes of the previous editions of Medical Physics by the same authors, with the first edition being published in 1985. In this edition, improvements and corrections have been made to make the content more complete. The first 16 chapters deal with Radiophysics, including chapters on the Physical Principles of Radiodiagnosis, Physical Principles of Nuclear Medicine, Physical Principles of Radiotherapy, Elements of Radiobiology, and Elements of Radiation Protection. Like the previous editions, this edition is not only intended for medical students, but can also serve as an introductory reference book for specialized doctors and trainees, as well as for any other scientist with a particular interest in the applications of Physics of ionizing radiation in Medicine.
The following chapters present basic Physical principles and concepts related to energy, work, and heat, describe the methods of Physics applied in the diagnosis and treatment with ultrasound, laser, MRI, and electricity. They also provide elements of Optics, Acoustics, as well as the Physics of liquids and gases and the organology of basic physiological parameters. Additionally, they refer to the organs of hearing and vision.
The chapters also include Physics of the skeletal system, Basic principles of fluid flow-Hemodynamics, Basic applications of Physics in Urodynamics, and Mass transfer through membranes-Dispersion systems.
The selection of these topics was based on the completion of knowledge acquired from Physiology, Biology, or specific clinical courses, as well as the difficulty in creating models of interpretation and understanding of the corresponding biological phenomena and physiological functions. All chapters require some knowledge of Mathematics, which will be provided within the framework of teaching and is referred to in Appendices at the end of the textbook. Moreover, the modern physician must have a basic knowledge of Mathematics because they are now essential in many medical specialties.
