... In the ancient Church, the main purpose of Lent was to prepare the "Catechumens" for Baptism, which at that time took place during the Easter Vigil. But even today, when the Church no longer baptizes at a later age and the institution of catechesis no longer exists, the basic meaning of Lent remains the same. Because, even though we are baptized, what we constantly lose and betray is exactly what we received through Baptism. So Easter for us is the return to our Baptism and therefore Lent is our preparation for this return; the slow but persistent effort to finally achieve our own "passage", our Easter into the new life in Christ...
