Description

This book comes to complement the dialogue we opened with the special issue of "Media, Pornography and Globalization" (2010), and the International Journal of Media and Cultural Politics titled "Post/feminism and the politics of mediated sex" (2011). It is the result of our engagement with the relationship between the sex industry, technology, and media in the era of globalization. By observing complex phenomena such as the transfer of production and consumption practices of content between Western markets and Eastern countries, the commodification of youth sexuality, the hyper-sexualization of everyday life by the media, and the forced human movement (human trafficking, prostitution), we decided to study in depth the industry of sexuality and sex, in the broad sense. In the 21st century, the cultural management of new image technologies leads, on the one hand, to the imposition of a global panoptic that has been analyzed in other studies of this series, and on the other hand, to the diffusion of the "global sexual image" that is also the focus of our study.

This collective volume continues our reflection and examines the complex interaction between mass media and popular culture and the sex industry. It fills a recognized research gap and represents an original effort by the Greek academic community to explore the cultural, social, and economic dimensions of this combination of factors regarding their interdependence, economic ties, and their social and cultural effects.
