Florina peppers or peppers of Florina? The island or the isle? Was it sent or was it sent? Dozens of such questions torment the average speaker of the Greek language, who is consumed by the futile search for "truth" in such false dilemmas through slippery logical or hyper-adaptive paths.
Although the issue of linguistic level in modern standard Greek is not devoid of ideological and socio-political extensions due to its connection with the shortcomings of the language issue, the Greek language as a structure and usage proves superior to the centrifugal regulatory practices of (dis)accounting. The literary level in contemporaneity is, in a sense, an idiosyncratic functional level, sociolinguistically and pragmatically determined, which is connected to all levels of linguistic analysis, is traced back to the diachrony of the Greek language and artificial retrieval, and mainly concerns a variety in the periphery of the language in the form of deviations and/or fossils. The literary elements (words, phrases, fragments) constitute at times a mandatory and at times an optional stylistic and semantic choice with a specialized/discriminatory linguistic and functional function, which tend to be morphologically adapted to the demotic but also to be reproduced analogically through (anti)loanwords in special uses.

The present collective volume, the fruit of ten specialized linguists (A. Anastasiadi-Symeonidi, A. Iordanidou, M. Kamelaki, P. Kabaki-Vougioukli, G. Katsouda, P.G. Kripas, I. Manolessou, Ch. Basea-Bezantakou, G. Nikolaou, A. Fliatouras) from various fields of linguistics (theoretical, historical, and applied), attempts with sober and descriptive scientific discourse to decode the current function of the literary level, to open up research avenues, and to answer fundamental questions, such as:

- What can be considered literary in modern standard Greek and what is the difference from Katharevousa (one expression of which is pseudo-logic)?
- How can the degree of literacy be measured and how do texts reflect the changes as well as the obsessions of the literary level?
- What are the limits of systemic functioning and ideological use of the variety?
- What is the lexicographic and educational perspective of the literary level?

Eight texts, two indexes, two appendices, and dozens of tables with representative material may lead the reader of the volume to wonder: Did the house become a home or did the home need the house? And, therefore, is the literary level a dead body, floating matter, or both?
