Crises, whether developmental or sudden, are a part of life that everyone, sooner or later, will be called to face. The consequences of a crisis are multiple and multi-layered for the people (adults and children) who experience it. The main characteristic is that the individual is overwhelmed by intense feelings of disappointment, despair, and mainly disorganization, which render them unable to react and utilize their potential. These feelings are usually much more intense in children and adolescents, which is why they need the guidance and support of significant adults to manage to cope and start functioning effectively again.
This book is part of a broader effort aimed at preparing significant adults (educators and parents) to be able to manage crises experienced by children. It includes a basic theoretical framework regarding the types of crises, the expected reactions of children by age group, as well as ways to support children facing a crisis in the family, school, and/or broader social context. Additionally, the book includes examples for the psycho-pedagogical support of children in the classroom, as well as a model action plan for crisis management in the school community.
