Description

The struggle for the claim of Macedonia was the toughest and relentless battle that took place in the Balkans, just before the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the Balkan Wars that meant the incorporation of the largest part of it into Greece.

In this struggle, not only the countries whose large parts of the population lived there and Turkey, which sought to save its empire, were involved, but also countries that aspired to find an outlet to the Aegean Sea, such as Russia and Austria, which had their perennial goal of access to the warm sea, and other Western Powers that wanted to prevent such a possibility by any means.

The scenes of brutality that took place in this conflict deeply affected the consciousness of the Balkan peoples. It became a timeless problem in their relations for over a hundred years and prevented the finding of a solution, despite the fact that everyone understood its necessity.

For some, the signing of the Agreement in Prespa, which took place after fruitless negotiations for about thirty years, is a redemption for the problems that have plagued the relations between the Greek state and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia for about seventy years and a hope for peaceful coexistence in the future.
However, for others, especially the residents of Northern Greece, this Agreement is a disgrace for the Greek state, because its signing means abandoning history, culture, and language and surrendering them to a people that has minimal connection to the historical and spiritual space of Macedonia.

This is exactly the goal of this publication. To shed light on the aspects of the Macedonian Issue, as it is called, which remain unknown and with historical documentation, in a calm and objective manner, free from fanaticism and biases, to introduce the reading audience to the historical and diplomatic events that took place in this harsh conflict, which still today is a major national problem that unfortunately divides the Greek people.
