Description

The book that you hold in your hands aspires to be a different Guide to the Old Town of Chania, an alternative tool for browsing its visible aspects and unveil its invisible facets through the eyes of 25 contemporary cartographers who recorded them. It is a collective work as it includes mainly the maps of the participants (part one) and the lectures (part two) of the invited speakers in the workshop of city research and representation Chania Mantal Maps and Psychogeography, which was organized with the support of the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete and was hosted by the Center of Mediterranean Architecture in Chania, Crete, in September 2017. The aim of the workshop was to produce maps of the Old City of Chania starting from two major mapping practices, Kevin Lynch's mental mapping and situationist psychogeography. We hope that the book will be an alternative guide to acknowledge the multiple facets and aspects of the historic city of Chania, and orient us, not only geographically in the city, but also by unveiling its often concealed and unseen features. It can, thus, be an exemplar of a guide for other cities as well.

E. Tsakiri, S. Yiannoudes
