Like in all timers of this type, one first makes a full rotation to the right and then adjusts to the left to the desired time: e.g. for 20 minutes, first turn clockwise until 0 (60) and then counterclockwise to 20. If this is not done, the timer only rings momentarily and some people think it doesn't work!
