The rod is rough, so it restores the blade to a very good condition even if the knife hasn't been sharpened for a long time (A big advantage if you don't have a sharpening stone or sharpener and you don't want to buy/deal with one. It doesn't replace the whetstone, as if you want a razor-sharp blade you will need it, but for household use without high demands, it is very decent). The length may be a bit small and may make it difficult for beginners. The only negative is that the protection is not stable (it rotates), so it requires a little attention not to cut a finger. If you hold it against the tip of your thumb, you won't have a problem, but it remains a construction error. If washed, it needs to be dried immediately with a towel as it is not stainless material
