Description

"Honor and Money" is a work about the role of money in love and family relationships in early 20th century Greece. The young heroine, Rini, falls in love with a young man from a higher class. However, her mother refuses to give the dowry that the prospective groom wants, even when he kidnaps her daughter. Through a simple and short story, the author manages to capture with vivid power and critical thinking a timeless and crucial social problem, with a very advanced approach for the Greek reality of the time regarding the women's issue.

Eri Stavropoulou's study, starting from Theotokis' work, attempts to shed light on the theme of the woman in love in Greek and broader European literature, from around the mid-19th century to World War I. Examples from the works of Kostis Palamas, Callirrhoe Parren, Grigorios Xenopoulos, Kostas Chatzopoulos, Nikos Kazantzakis, Balzac, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Ibsen, Hardy, Strindberg, Chekhov, and others show that, during a period of struggles for education, equality, and substantial liberation of women, literature presents tragic love stories that clash with economic interests or are violently interrupted when social morality does not allow the fulfillment of the romantic feeling. Among these heroines, Rini stands out for her courageous stance and defense of her right to life.
