Italy, September 1943. The government of the country changes sides and declares war on Germany. The Italian north is controlled by the fascists, the henchmen of the Germans; the south has been liberated by the Allies, whose forces encounter strong resistance as they attempt to move north.

Having survived the hell of the Russian front, officer Martin Bora is transferred to Verona and ordered to investigate the murder of a prominent local fascist leader. It is a strange case that threatens to damage the public image of the regime. The first suspicions fall on Clara, the young widow of the victim.

In close proximity to Bora's headquarters, Italian police inspector Sandro Guidi is already on the hunt for an eccentric serial killer. The two men join forces to solve the crimes, but Bora, facing problems due to his resistance to the methods of the SS, must be cautious.

Against the backdrop of the Allies' struggle against fascist forces and the tragedy of the Holocaust, a thrilling pursuit begins to uncover the murderers.
