Description

The present study is the result of Papadiamantis' long teaching at the Neohellenic Institute of the Sorbonne. It is based on an objective, impartial, purely philological reading of the author's entire work: novels and stories. By observing, from work to work, various persistent images, scenes, expressions, symbols, and attempting to decipher a series of texts where there is clearly a cryptographic way of writing, it defines three fundamental, interconnected, mythical units: 1) the myth of water, drowning and abyss, 2) the myth of death, 3) the "family" myth, which narrates the love of the son for his imaginary mother, the Luciferian identification of the son with Christ and the enchanting and murderous mother with the Virgin Mary, and the tragic end of this love. The mythical character of Papadiamantis' writing is confirmed by the handling of various myths: variations, substitutions, inversions, etc.
