Description

This work titled "History of Greek Literature and its Reception from 1880 to 2000" consists of three sections. The first section deals with literature during the years of the militant Demoticism (1880-1917). The second section covers the interwar years (1918-1940) and the third section refers to the Occupation, the Civil War, and extends until the end of the 20th century. Therefore, it is not a history of modern Greek literature from its inception (1000 AD) to the present day, but exclusively for the last period of the last 120 years. It is not another History of modern Greek literature that is formed as a sum of major poets and prose writers and does not follow their recognized and successful tradition. It is a different kind of conception of the history of literature, as here we observe its development, studying the works of a corresponding period (small time intervals of about 4, 5, or 6 years) and at the same time their reception by contemporary critics. In other words, an attempt is made to present the evolution of ideas, schools, etc. that inspire literature, as both major and minor authors are presented, reproducing the atmosphere and problematic of the respective days. Each chapter consists of: (a) a historical chronicle, (b) the research field on which the following text is based, and (c) a fairly complete bibliography, mainly drawn from contemporary journals, material that largely remains unexplored. Specifically, the intermediate part of the History is presented today, which refers to the interwar period, a phase that determined the further development of Greek literature and laid the foundations for the evaluation of the past. An effort is made to critically address many of the ideologies prevailing (unfounded and unhistorical) suddenly for the "magical image" of the generation of the '30s, based on the documents. On the back cover of the edition, the reader reads the following: If this work was misleadingly named "History of Greek Literature and its Reception in the years 1876 to 1985/2000", a title that refers to the well-known Histories and may create other expectations, it could also be named: (a) -Essay on the history of literature, (b) - (E)xposition of literature I - by an avid reader of letters, (c) -Literary grammar I - by an amateur but also avid bibliophile, (d) -Strolling through the streets and alleys of Greek letters, (e) -Comprehensive chronicle of literature, where the hypothetical researcher lovingly records the works he reads, as they are presented in chronological order, participating, in one way or another, in the whole process - with his personal judgment - and approaching both "truth" and "illusion" as a person of his time. I claim that this work seeks to cover, if possible, all these meanings. I say "all" because indeed all serve the same idea. My intention, however, was to deliver a useful "tool" for every "self-punishing" member of our guild.
