Description

This book is the fruit of an effort to understand a multitude of heterogeneous conditions concerning the conceptualization of light and darkness, the utopian city, death, and the indescribable God in Byzantine culture. A common element in the four exemplary cases analyzed here is the revelation of an unmanifestable truth. The book is the third and final part of a trilogy, the first two parts of which are: "The Inverted Dionysus. Sketch of a somatotheory of algesthetic compulsion" (Smili, Athens 2011) and "Withdrawal(-ing). Forms of otherness in Byzantine culture" (Smili, Athens 2014). The core of this third part deals with the treatment of the opposing pairs light-darkness, real-utopian, perishable earthly-divine eternal, revealed-hidden, as constitutive elements of Byzantine identity.
