Description

In the case of Greek historiography, starting from the great composition of Konstantinos Paparrigopoulos for the unified and continuous Greek national history and its tripartite distinction (antiquity-Byzantium-modern times), a series of issues were raised, such as the genesis of the Greek nation and its historical trajectory, Greek identity in chronological evolution and the associated conceptualization of the terms that constitute the core of this volume. In recent years, there has been a lively reflection in Greece on issues of identity, especially in their connection with the concept of Greekness. Recent historical research has enriched our knowledge, refined our historical perspective, contributed to new critical approaches, and expanded the reflection on the historical paths of concepts and collective definitions. In reality, the issue has concerned not only academic historiography, but also public history, given the particular importance that historical past has in modern Greece as an experiential relationship, as a research issue, and as a legitimizing factor for current political objectives. The result was a dialogue that, often prompted by current situations, was sometimes characterized by sharpness, bordering on warfare.

In the pages of this volume, studies by scholars from different schools, perspectives, and generations are hosted, from academic and research institutions in Greece and abroad; studies that cover a wide range of themes in the long term and relate to examples from different historical experiences and socio-political environments: the ancient and Byzantine world, the period of Latin rule and Ottoman domination, the space of the Greek diaspora, the years of the Greek Revolution and the establishment of the Greek state until the early 20th century.
