Description

Since 2010, the year the economic crisis began, Greek-German relations have deteriorated rapidly, as they became trapped in the stereotypes of the media. Berlin appeared to be "obsessed" with imposing austerity policies, while at the same time "unproductive" and "lazy" Greeks refused to change their mentality and take responsibility for rebuilding their country. The way in which the "national" characteristics of the "bankrupt" Greeks and the "historically arrogant" Germans were portrayed during the recent traumatic period brought back to the forefront the history of Greek-German relations, especially the perspectives under which Greek society accepted and has since managed the long shadow of the German Occupation. However, other positive aspects were silenced, such as Germany's active support and provision of asylum to many Greeks during the Dictatorship period (1967-1974). As revealed by the studies in this collective volume, Greek-German relations are part of complex historical processes and are not characterized by unilateralism or uniformity. In light of the current conjuncture, the restart of bilateral relations, this collective volume aims to provide the wider public with a set of research works based on the utilization of primary archival material and new historiographical approaches. These scientific studies can serve as a catalyst for upgrading public dialogue on an extremely urgent and crucial issue, such as Greece's relations with Germany throughout its long duration.
