Description
The founding act of terrorism in Greece is the secret annex accompanying the agreement for the installation of American bases in Greece (1955), with which our country undertook the obligation to implement the terrorist NATO operation "Stay Behind", which specialized in Greece under the code name "Red Provence".
The core of this sealed "Annex" - which remains strictly confidential for half a century - was revealed by Andreas Papandreou in his statement in 1990: "The paramilitary organization Red Provence was created in 1955 as a result of a secret annex to the agreement on the basis of which the American military bases were installed in Greece" ("Independent", 16-11-1990).
This illegal paramilitary and clandestine network played a leading role in the internal - and not only - political developments throughout the Cold War and was the instigator, organizer, guide, and, in some cases, the moral or physical perpetrator in all the terrorist acts that shook the country during the post-war period.
