Description

Margaret Hale, the daughter of a dissident priest, grows up in the idyllic landscape of rural southern England. When her father leaves the church for reasons of conscience, Margaret is forced to leave her comfortable home in Hampshire and move with her family to the north.

At first, she feels repulsion for the ugliness that surrounds her in the industrial city of Milton. However, she quickly realizes the poverty and unhappiness of the local workers who work in the cotton mills and develops a strong social consciousness. Her internal conflict is intensified by her stormy relationship with the self-made industrialist John Thornton, as their intense confrontation over his behavior towards the workers brings to the surface a deeper attraction between them.

For the first time translated into Greek, the always relevant, as at the time of its first publication in 1854, novel by Elizabeth Gaskell deals with a captivating love story set against the backdrop of the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution in England. With unparalleled narrative skill, the author blends personal emotions with the new social conditions that are being shaped in the industrial north, while creating in the character of Margaret Hale one of the most authentic heroines of Victorian literature.
