The day begins with a particularly gruesome crime, an arson that results in the death of six people, trapped inside an apartment sealed by the killer; the same evening, in the heart of the red-light district in the city of Aberdeen, the body of a prostitute, beaten to death, is discovered. For Detective Sergeant Logan McRae, this marks a bad start to yet another difficult shift. The once-hero of the Grampian Police has been relegated to the "Misfit Mob" of the police and is awaiting his dismissal at any moment.

Summer days in the Granite City, with the morgue filling up with charred bodies, murdered junkies, dismembered Labradors, and prostitutes beaten to death.
