Description

Which aspects of social life were affected by robbery? What are the consequences of this phenomenon and its suppression methods? To what extent did the problems of the newly established Greek state contribute to the escalation of this phenomenon? To what extent did the actions of the robbers affect the residents they plundered?

With these basic questions, the study aims to interpret the phenomenon of robbery, which was an integral part of traditional society for a long period of the modern Greek state (from around 1830 to 1930).

The memory of robbers such as Davéli, Yagoulas, the Arvanitakis, the Rendzai, and the Koumpai, or incidents such as the abduction of Sotiris Sotiriopoulos, later Prime Minister, in 1866, the murder of English tourists in Delphi in 1870, the robbery of Petra Filippia in 1926, and the abduction of MPs Melas and Mylonas in 1928, remains indelible.
