Description

In this volume, five short texts by Brion Gysin are presented for the first time in Greek, each revealing a different aspect of his thought, artistic vision, and writing style: The first, "That Hidden Glance," is an early prose piece with a surrealistic texture, sharply describing New York through the eyes of an "outsider." Following are the "Notes on Painting," written around 1960 but appearing on the occasion of a solo exhibition titled "Back in No Time" in 1994, after his death: though brief, it is considered an important text as Gysin rarely discussed his own work while he was alive. The "Poem of Poems" (after the "Song of Songs") is the first poem Gysin wrote using the "cut-up" technique: it is a collage of various parts from Shakespeare's "Sonnets," the "Song of Songs," Saint-John Perse's "Anabasis," and Huxley's "The Doors of Perception." He initially recorded it on an old tape recorder to show his friend William Burroughs the potential of his new discovery, and it remains unpublished in its entirety. "The Pipes of Pan" is indicative of his love for the music of the "Master Musicians of Jajouka" in Morocco, and a record of the dark and wild rituals that survived there in honor of the god Pan. Finally, "I Am That One," a small, enigmatic prose piece, possibly written in 1964 and unpublished during his lifetime, marks a characteristic transition from the style of his early stories to "The Last Museum," his first novel, in 1965.
