Description

Eleanor Oliphant is thirty years old, lives in Glasgow and works as an accountant in a graphic design company. Every day she goes to work, in the evenings she solves crossword puzzles and listens to radio soap operas, on Wednesdays she talks on the phone with her mother and waits for Friday to eat pizza and get drunk with vodka until Monday morning.

She is completely alone, but claims to be perfectly fine.

Until one day she falls in love with a singer and starts fantasizing - without even having met, without the slightest hint - that he is the man of her life. Only one colleague, Raymond, treats her very well - unlike the distance kept by the others. What is hiding behind Eleanor's strange and eccentric character?

I had read many reviews about this specific book. Some were good and some were not. That's why I was excited to read it and I was extremely happy when I received it. However, I wasn't particularly satisfied with this book. But, let's start from the beginning. The protagonist of the book is Eleanor, a very introverted and peculiar woman with a dark past. From the first pages of the book, I admit that I didn't like this character at all. She annoyed me but at the same time made me want to know why she is so eccentric and melancholic. Along the way, I understood that Eleanor is a deeply wounded woman, with both physical and psychological scars that are hard to erase. But until you understand what really led the protagonist to this behavior, you have already judged her harshly. Because that's who we are! We look at the image and appearance, not the essence and depth. Eleanor chose loneliness many times in her daily life, distanced herself from the world, and immersed herself in her melancholy. Through the pages of the book, I realized how easily one can let themselves become uncontrollable, not taking care of themselves, not loving themselves. It is very difficult to live away from everyone and everything. However, this choice made Eleanor find companionship in the person of Raymond. Don't be fooled! The book has no elements of romance. The author simply tries to point out how important the presence of others is in our lives. And Eleanor understood that. She changes her life, tries to behave "normally," and makes great efforts to finally feel free from all the things that torment her. In this journey, she falls and rises again. The heroine of this book is very strong. And if you have read everything I said about Eleanor so far, you are surely wondering what ultimately disappointed me about this particular book. I will tell you. It was the author's verbosity. I felt that she was writing so much without reaching any conclusion. I noticed that she mentioned details and information that didn't contribute anything to the plot and the story's premise. And all of this resulted in me finishing the book with a cold and indifferent ending. I would have preferred a more vibrant outcome, full of action and determination from the heroine's side. I would have liked to see Eleanor facing her fears face to face and seizing life by the teeth. Which didn't happen. It's okay.
