Consisting of 97 short chapters, "A Woman" is a novel about the multiple faces of the self and the other. The object of desire is not one woman but many, all real and at the same time creations of the imagination of a peculiar and unrestrained narrator. A narrator who indulges in the game of love:
"She is a woman. She loves me. You are the Paganini of kisses, I humbly say! [...] The kisses wander on her, on her neck, on the sunburnt arch of her shoulder, her face, her nose, the shells of her eyes, kisses on her gaze, her nostrils, the top of her head, her thighs move, as soon as they sway, they touch and separate, and the sides and the bones".
"She is a woman. She hates me. She constantly drives me away. She kicks me. She throws me like a squeezed lemon."
Estherhazy's novel is written with the language of the body - that's why the writing never ceases to surprise, constantly arousing the curiosity of the unsuspecting reader.
