Description

This book contains 21 studies of Comparative Folklore of Greece, the Balkans, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Black Sea, which are divided into four different sections: 1) Religious and Magical (chapters 1-8), 2) Ritual and Representational (chapters 9-11), 3) Linguistic and Philological (chapters 12-17), and 4) Theoretical and Biographical (chapters 18-21). The first section includes studies on sacred processions, the worship of Saint George in the Orthodox Balkans, the kiss of Judas and the transformations of Christ in folk traditions, anthropomorphic festive breads, the magic of mandrake, exorcism, the magical use of water, and the figure of Lazarus in the homonymous tragedy by Prevelakis and in folk tradition. The second section includes studies on representational customs, ritualism and imagination, games and sports in the folk culture of the Balkans.
The third section is dedicated to ethno-linguistic dialects of historical Thrace, folk poetry in the Karpathian dialect, Greek paralogues in Southeastern Europe, Pomak variations of the song about the Bridge of Arta, the Balkan man-woman in song and reality, and the historicity and archetypal myths in heroic songs. Finally, the fourth section deals with the concept of tradition in cultural sciences, continuities and discontinuities in the folk culture of the Balkans, the comparative methodology of G.A. Megas, and the unique theatrical translation by Nikolaos Politis.
