Description
There have been many efforts by many to determine the poet's true political-ideological identity. Some portray him as "progressive," others as "conservative," others as "apolitical." Modern research (Victor Ehrenberg, A.W. Gomme, K.J. Dover, H.-J. Newiger, etc.) tends to converge that he was none of these three purely. That what mainly interested him was "to make people laugh" and he achieved that perfectly. Not only Athens had fun at that time, but Greece and the whole world laughed with its soul and still laughs (especially at the ancient drama festivals). In the best book of all time, written about Aristophanes by the German classicist Victor Ehrnberg ("The World of Aristophanes," first in German and then translated by himself into English), it is clear and proven that the people (das Volk, the people), and especially the farmers, were the exclusive material of his work. Life, everyday life, economic, social, political, etc. problems, especially in relation to the current state of the gloomy Peloponnesian War.
