The experience of imprisonment and exile has been etched in the body of Greek society, expressed in literature, in the arts, becoming a mnemonic place, marking the modern Greek culture of the 20th century. Voglis' book contributes to making this experience the subject of historical analysis, and even comparative analysis. Because through the Greek experience of imprisonment and exile, it analyzes the very concept and practice of confinement, the technology of punishment and discipline. However, it does not see the prisoners as passive subjects. It explores how they experienced this experience and even the way in which, in contrast, they shaped themselves. Thus, it highlights the concept of subjectivity within social history.
