Description

The honorary ambassador Alexandros P. Mallias is a renowned expert on the Balkans. He has been systematically and continuously involved with the Macedonian issue since 1991. In 1995, he was the first Diplomatic Representative of Greece in Skopje after the signing of the Interim Agreement. As a diplomat, he served under 11 governments and 15 Foreign Ministers.

In this essay, he emphasizes that the precondition for finding a solution to the so-called national issues is dialogue. He criticizes the lack of sincere effort in this direction. The results, especially regarding the Macedonian issue, were predictable and visible. In his analysis of the Prespa Agreement, he highlights the positive significance of the complex name "Northern Macedonia" with even a constitutional revision. However, he also explains why the central issues of language and nationality/citizenship remain its "Achilles' heel." The Agreement does not ensure their clarity and purity.

In the significant and weighty Foreword, Evangelos Venizelos emphasizes that: "Alexandros Mallias systematically follows national issues and fulfills the obligation to express his views, contributing to a national dialogue that, unfortunately, is often hindered and influenced by the opportunistic considerations of domestic politics. This book is a first, direct, and very useful analysis of the Prespa Agreement, placing it within its historical and broader international political context."
