Description

The syndrome of borders is a kind of "disease" that does not even exist in the catalog of recognized mental disorders. This novel speaks precisely about this disease. With two different narrative voices, it talks about the borders of totalitarianism, escape, guilt, love, hope, coexistence, residence permit, and migration. In "Little Diary of Borders" nothing special happens - and at the same time, everything happens. The protagonist narrates the first contact with a foreign country (Greece) of a group of Albanian immigrants who, after the collapse of the totalitarian regime of E. Hoxha, cross the Greek-Albanian borders on foot in the early '90s. It is a narrative where drama and tragedy coexist with black humor and redemptive self-irony. Since it was first published in Greece in 2006, "Little Diary of Borders" has become a literary reference point for some of the hottest issues of our days, borders and migration. One of the most topical books of our time.

I crossed the borders of a foreign country, Greece, on 15-10-1991. It was the first time I saw the borders of another country and also the first time I saw the borders of my homeland: the extreme limits of a world that may have thrown us out of time, out of the world. In the escape operation, I thought I would be alone, but I found myself walking with a caravan of people... ... At the border checkpoint, from the Albanian side, four soldiers were waiting for us with Kalashnikovs and the officer, who looked at us with a gaze that revealed something between disdain and anger. The officer: "Where are you going?" A voice: "To leave...." The officer: "Who spoke?" (Silence) The officer: "Do you have passports?" A voice: "You gave us passports, didn't you?" The officer: "Who spoke?" (Silence) The officer: "Do you know that you may have a worse fate where you're going?" A voice: "Let's leave and cross..." The officer: "Okay then, whoever wants can pass..."
