Description

Leon Trotsky was a Marxist intellectual and revolutionary in Tsarist Russia. He was elected president of the Soviet of Saint Petersburg during the 1905 Revolution, was sent to Siberia, exiled, and returned to Russia in 1917. He then joined Lenin's Bolshevik Party and dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the revolution. He was elected president of the Soviet of Saint Petersburg again and organized the decisive October uprising in 1917. As Commissar of Foreign Affairs, he negotiated the peace treaty with Germany. As Commissar of War, he organized the Red Army and led it to victory.
After Lenin's death, he found himself isolated from Stalin, who was surrounded by communist bureaucrats. Trotsky was a champion of world revolution and the struggle against bureaucracy, goals that he defended along with Serge. He was expelled from the Party in 1927. Removed from active politics and in exile, he participated in the international struggle against capitalism and the totalitarian Stalinist regime. Stalin accused him of being a Hitler agent and organized his assassination in Mexico in 1940.
This life, perfectly harmonized with the turbulent history of the era, is being reconstructed by Victor Serge and Natalia Sedova, Trotsky's widow, in an objective and reliable biography.
