Description

The Lexicon, the result of a systematic study of lithic technology and related literature for almost thirty years, attempts to provide a comprehensive picture of the typology of prehistoric stone tools and related technologies. The approach involves two main levels: the description and analysis of 983 relevant entries, with the terminology provided in French and English, accompanied by 111 explanatory images, and the analysis through which the documentation of lithic activities is presented, with the hierarchical distribution and depiction of 1776 descriptive characteristics.

The Lexicon represents a first systematic effort to integrate the advantages of various approaches to the study of lithic technology and critically engages with the issue of terminology and the precise identification of tool names. It proposes a common language for reading and encoding stone tools and their recording in the form of descriptive characteristics in databases. It is flexible in that it can be enriched with new variables and features at any time, which can also be independently redefined during the statistical processing of data, depending on the questions posed by the researcher in order to provide a deep interpretation of the material.

Methodologically, the proposed analytical approach to lithic technology and the abundance of descriptive characteristics allow for not only more accurate description, but also the application of advanced statistical methods. These document, among other things, variability, i.e. the degree of variation and diversity, relevance and correlation, as well as the interaction of the compared variables within lithic technology. In this way, the information required for a complete and comprehensive study is extracted (e.g. to what extent the raw material affects the application of methods and techniques, which specific characteristics of these variables are responsible for any differences, what is the degree of correlation between typology and tool use or preservation status, which factors determine the degree of exploitation, whether the techniques of fragmentation and processing are interdependent, etc.).
