This study aims to cover an important gap in the teaching approach of creative writing at the university level, as well as to provide necessary supporting material in any context of systematic and organized engagement with this specific field. Focusing on prose, it utilizes conceptual frameworks and methodological tools provided by the field of storytelling. Issues concerning the immediate elements of a work (author, title, motto, prologue, narrative framing) are presented. The narrative process itself is examined in detail, in light of contemporary narrative theory, with specific reference to plot, character development, focalization, time, rendering of speech and thoughts of fictional characters. The ultimate goal is to make the mechanisms of narrative texts and the various techniques of constructing literary meaning and interpretations understandable to the reader. Finally, a variety of original activities are proposed to consolidate theoretical concepts.
