Description

"I dare to note to the care of both my familiar and unfamiliar friends that the "Notes in the Margin" related to the unpublished book (if it will be printed) of my "Poetry" are for me in many ways my own poetry itself, in whatever can be generally or briefly expressed. Or, better yet, the "Notes in the Margin" are an introduction to my "Poetry," as "The Twelve Commandments of the Gypsy" are the propylaea that lead us to the "Flute of the King." In these notes of mine, my entire speculative ensemble is almost concentrated."
Kostis Palamas

The "Notes in the Margin" are initially published in the periodical press, mostly in the magazine "O Nymas" and, secondarily, in the magazines "Oi Neoi," "Kallitechnia," and "Pantognostis," covering a period of fourteen years (1909-1923). In the Introduction of the book by Mara Psalti, their reading is proposed as potential entries of three distinct journals (corresponding to the triple Palamian poetry), the special mark and position in Palamas' work are appreciated, and the editorial principles followed are developed with a retrospective look at the initial publications of the texts. After the main part of Palamas' 180 "Notes," which is complemented by an Appendix with unpublished notes, the section of "Annotations" follows with explanations of terms and names, references to Palamian sources, and connection of the references in the "Notes" with other Palamian texts. From today's perspective, in the "Notes in the Margin," not only are Palamas' views modern, but also the form in which they are presented. The programmatically interrupted and fragmentary character of the notes, the continuous interweaving of life and work, the alternations of tone, and the accumulation of heterogeneous material are elements that make the Palamian marginalia particularly attractive to the contemporary reader. If Palamas of the brief lyrical poems is poetic, the one who seems to have gained the reader's interest in recent decades, then, by analogy, we can also turn to the Palamas of the developed poetry, composed of these notes, articulated vertebrally in exemplary intersecting paragraphs.
