Description

1961 is a milestone year for modern Greek history. The founding of the Union of the Centre and the elections that remained in collective memory as "elections of violence and fraud" constitute significant starting points for a decade filled with political events that had just begun. In the following period, political constants were challenged and the demand for the consolidation of democracy was strengthened. The subject of this book is the study of the Anendotos Agonas of the Union of the Centre: the strategic project of the official opposition, which aimed to change the political correlations by weakening the ERE of Konstantinos Karamanlis and shaping the unity of the Centre.

Under the leadership of Georgios Papandreou and with the active participation of a dynamic core of important figures - led by Konstantinos Mitsotakis and the publisher of the newspaper Eleftheria Panos Kokkas - the new party managed to establish a dialectical relationship with broader layers of Greek society in a short period of time. This allowed Anendotos to function as a conduit for political quests and a means for social demands. Based on archival research from Greece and abroad, interviews with protagonists of the era, and exhaustive research of relevant literature, this particular study aims to highlight the strategic planning of this complex and unprecedented project, attempting a comprehensive interpretation of it as a phenomenon embedded in the broader political and social context of the era.
