Harry Morgan is a tough man. He has courage, is self-sufficient, knows about alcohol and guns, and believes, as he characteristically claims, that "there is no law that says you have to live hungry." A sailor with his own boat, Morgan is forced to support his family by illegally crossing the border with immigrants or criminals of all kinds, avoiding at times the stray bullets of the Coast Guard and at other times unexpected betrayals. However, his path seems predetermined, as in this world not even the "tough" can survive unpunished. A novel that, although it remained in the shadow of the other, more famous works of the great Nobel laureate author, "To Have and Have Not" hides moments of unique reading emotion and demonstrates, perhaps more than any other, Hemingway's worldview and his ability to create suspense in the reader about the fate of his heroes.
