Description

The friendship and collaboration between Evangelos Averoff and George Seferis were tested in late 1958 and early 1959 due to their disagreement on the choices and course of the Cyprus issue resolution, resulting in the exclusion of George Seferis, ambassador in London, from the Zurich talks. The two men exchanged several letters, and Konstantinos and Ioanna Tsatsos intervened in the dispute. This was followed by a long period of estrangement, with their relationship never being restored.

During the period when Evangelos Averoff was Foreign Minister in the Karamanlis government, Seferis initially served as director in the B/ Political Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1956-1957 and as Greece's ambassador to London from 1957 to 1962. He recorded his experiences and disagreements in his diaries and correspondence. He attributed wrong choices and frivolity to Evangelos Averoff while appreciating the positions and stance of Konstantinos Karamanlis.

The book dispels many of the myths surrounding the resolution of the Cyprus issue and overturns established versions and agendas, simultaneously demonstrating the seriousness, consistency, sound judgment, and foresight of Seferis, which were confirmed many times in the years that followed.

He was not only a great poet but also a remarkable diplomat.
